The 1960's saw a revolution in the design of furniture, and creations during this period saw a use of new materials and outlandish styling to product fun and useful pieces. In the realms of retro dining tables, Eero Saarinen decided that the legs on tables got in the way of the chairs, and thought long and hard about how to remove this impediment. This led to the creation of his thin pedestal stem using aluminium, that was strong to support a marble table top, but able to be produced much thinner than say using fiberglass to ensure the legs were not intrusive at all. His range of Tulip tables became so popular amongst the world's designers, that soon many companies were imitating this stunning new base deisign.
In terms of Retro Coffee Tables, the most striking and long lasting design is the glass coffee table by Isamu Noguchi - known by most as the Noguchi Coffee Table. The elegant yet uneven triangular shaped glass top is very thick at 19 mm and sits atop a hard wood timber base effortlessly. The table base has two identical pieces of timber and shines through the clear glass top with its pronounced grain visible.
A retro side table will always look in its place, despite the surrounding decor. A popular piece that is still relevant today is the Eileen Gray Side Table, which features a stunning bent metal tube with a manual height adjustment and glass surface. In a period when many smoked cigarettes, this was also considered a smoking table; but was really designed for an ill relative who liked eating dinner in bed.
